Symptoms & Causes of Back Pain During Pregnancy

Back pain is the most common reason we see women during pregnancy. It can begin at any stage, but it is most common in the second trimester when the demands on the body increase due to changes in weight and posture. Most women experience a dull ache across the lower back or pelvis, which can sometimes radiate into the buttock muscles or hips as the pelvis begins to loosen and widen. Women may also feel sharp pain in the front of their pelvis, around the pubic bone, which is likely caused by pubic symphysis dysfunction. This is quite common during pregnancy.

When Should I See a Chiropractor During Pregnancy?

If you’re experiencing discomfort while walking or sleeping, we recommend seeing a chiropractor, as these symptoms often intensify as your pregnancy progresses. In addition to providing relief, our goal is to optimise the alignment of your pelvis and sacrum, ensuring your body is balanced and your baby is positioned for the best possible birth. This is why we recommend chiropractic care to all women during pregnancy.

Chiropractors accurately locate the specific joints that need gentle adjustment. This restores optimal alignment and the brain-body connection, allowing your body to heal and prepare for birth.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are chiropractors trained to treat pregnant women?

The training provided to all Chiropractors during their masters degree means they can treat pregnant women. However at Pure Chiropractic a number of our Chiropractors have a special interest in supporting pregnant women and babies and have thus done further training to enhance their skills in this area and provide the best possible care for you and your baby.

  • When should I start seeing a chiropractor during pregnancy?

We recommend women start to see a chiropractor before they conceive, to ensure proper biomechanics of the body to adapt to the demands of pregnancy. Most commonly we see women when they have become symptomatic and started with back pain, neck pain or leg pain. Some of these pains can become more intense as the demand on the body increase throughout your pregnancy, so at the first sign of discomfort we highly recommend you book in to see us. You can do this by clicking here.

  • Can you see a chiropractor when pregnant?

Yes, it is actually extremely beneficial to see a chiropractor during pregnancy, Not only to relieve any symptoms caused by the increased demands on the body but also to ensure optimal alignment of the pelvis and sacrum to give adequate space for your baby to adopt the best possible position during birth.

Chiropractic care for infants is gentle and involves spinal adjustments, along with working closely with the cranial bones.

What Does Chiropractic Care for Babies Involve?

Chiropractic care for babies is extremely gentle, using no more pressure than you would tolerate on your eyeball. We combine spinal adjustments with working closely on the cranial bones of the skull.

Before beginning any treatment, we conduct a thorough examination to assess your baby's spinal health, neurological health, orthopaedic health, and developmental milestones.

What Are the Signs That My Baby Could Benefit from Chiropractic Care?

A baby's skull is soft and malleable, and during the birth process, it may become compressed, potentially impacting the cranial nerves.

Cranial nerves play a vital role in the daily functioning of the body and your child's development. If they are impacted in any way, they could cause symptoms such as constipation, reflux, frequent illnesses, or general irritability.

Does My Baby Need Chiropractic Treatment?

Although many parents bring babies and children to us when they have symptoms or have experienced a traumatic birth involving interventions such as forceps or ventouse, we highly recommend that all babies are checked post-birth by a chiropractor. Even if you had a natural vaginal birth, the birth process can place significant demands on your baby’s body.

This is why we offer a free post-labour check to all babies whose mums we have treated throughout pregnancy. If we haven’t been treating you during your pregnancy but you’d like to speak with a chiropractor about how we can help, please send us an email or call us on 01202 463 405.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can chiropractic care help if I am struggling with breastfeeding?

There are many reasons why your baby may be struggling with breastfeeding but if it is because they have a tightness throughout their neck or jaw, then Chiropractic may be able to help.

Babies that have neck or jaw tightness may be able to feed better on one breast compared to the other or you may see their jaw moving to one side when they yawn.

Other reasons why a baby might not be able to breastfeed well may be due to an abnormal suck. Sucking is controlled by the cranial nerves, which as mentioned above can become compressed during birth due to the soft nature of the cranial bones. Our Chiropractors work with the cranial bones during treatment to ensure proper function of the cranial nerves. An incorrect suck or latch could also be due to a tongue tie. If we suspect your baby may have one we can refer them to our local private midwife to have a tongue tie cut.

  • What does a Paediatric chiropractor do?

Like all chiropractors our aim is to optimise the function of your nervous system and your brain body connection. The cranial nerves impact a child’s development and daily function.

  • Is it safe to take a child to a chiropractor?

Our Chiropractors have done extensive post-graduate training for paediatric care for your baby or child. Before we begin any treatment on your child we conduct a thorough examination to ensure we provide them with the correct care that they need. The care we provide to babies is extremely gentle, and no more pressure than you can tolerate on your eyeball, making it very safe for your baby.

  • What age can a baby go to a chiropractor?

We can see your baby as soon as they have been born; however, most parents usually bring their baby to us around 6 weeks old as this is when they start to notice any symptoms or issues arising.
