What does Chiropractic Care for Babies look like?
Chiropractic care for babies is extremely gentle and we use no more pressure than you would be able to tolerate on your eyeball. We use a combination of spinal adjustments as well as working closely with the cranial bones of the skull.
Before we begin any treatment on your baby we conduct a thorough examination to assess their spinal health, neurological health, orthopaedic health and developmental milestones.
What are the signs that my baby could benefit from chiropractic care?
A babies skull is soft and malleable and during the birth process it may become compressed which can impact the cranial nerves.
Your cranial nerves are involved in the daily function of your body and also your child’s development. So if they impacted in any way they could cause symptoms which may present as constipation, reflux, constant illness’ or just general irritability.
Does my baby need chiropractic treatment?
Although many parents bring babies and children to us when they have symptoms or if they had a traumatic birth that may have involved intervention such a s forceps or ventouse. We highly recommend that all babies are checked post birth by a Chiropractor. Although you may have had a natural vaginal birth, the birth process can put a lot of demand on your babies body. This is why we offer a free post-labour check to all of our babies who’s mum we have been treating throughout pregnancy. If we haven’t been treating you throughout your pregnancy and you would like to speak to a Chiropractor to see how we can help then please send us an email or call us on 01202 463 405.
Can chiropractic care help if I am struggling with breastfeeding?
There are many reasons why your baby may be struggling with breastfeeding but if it is because they have a tightness throughout their neck or jaw, then Chiropractic may be able to help.
Babies that have neck or jaw tightness may be able to feed better on one breast compared to the other or you may see their jaw moving to one side when they yawn.
Other reasons why a baby might not be able to breastfeed well may be due to an abnormal suck. Sucking is controlled by the cranial nerves, which as mentioned above can become compressed during birth due to the soft nature of the cranial bones. Our Chiropractors work with the cranial bones during treatment to ensure proper function of the cranial nerves. An incorrect suck or latch could also be due to a tongue tie. We check for this during a consultation, and if we suspect your baby may have one we can refer them to our local private midwife to have a tongue tie cut.
