Why do Chiropractors adjust the spine?
When most people think of Chiropractic they think about the back and cracking bones. However, Chiropractic is about so much more than just your spine. Chiropractic is study of the nervous system which compromises of your brain, spinal cord and all of the nerves that exit and control everything in your body. Your nervous system is an information highway. Your brain sends messages to your body to tell it what to do, and your body sends messages to your brain to tell it how the body is doing.
Chiropractors focus on the spine because it is your spine that protects your nervous system. However, just like anything else in your body your spine can become injured through physical stress. Caused by too much sitting, looking at your phone, working at a computer and bending or lifting heavy things. Emotional stress can have the same effect. This causes a physical response where our shoulders tend to tighten up, and we become more hunched over.
This physical and emotional stress causes the bones of the spine to put pressure on the nervous system. Which then starts to disrupt the flow between the brain and the body. Meaning the brain can’t communicate very well with the body, and the body can’t communicate very well with the brain. As a result, your body doesn’t know how to heal or function properly, so you get stuck with pain and symptoms for a very long time.
What is the cracking noise you hear during an adjustment?
It is a Chiropractors job to assess your spine and locate any spinal segments that might be injured, and get them moving again. Ensuring they are no longer put pressure on your nervous system. Therefore, Allowing your body to heal and function at its best.
There are many ways that Chiropractors do this, one of them being a manual diversified adjustment. This is the one people typically see in TikToks, Youtube videos and on Facebook, because of the clicking and popping noises associated with this adjustment. Many people find these noises very satisfying, making for great entertainment.
When applied by a qualified Chiropractor to the specific joints that need it, manual diversified adjustments are very effective. We aren’t moving bones when we adjust the spine, we are simply breaking down any scar tissue surrounding the injured joint to allow it to move freely itself. Once the joint starts to do this a clicking and popping noise can be heard, which is gas being released by the joint.
This technique isn’t suitable for everyone, so at Pure Wellness we use a variety of techniques to suit each client. These include the use of an activator, blocking and more tonal techniques that involve the breath. These all work to release the spine and improve your brain and body communication, allowing you to heal at your best.
The Activator is a tool we use on the spine, as the device works it will make a clicking sound. This isn’t actually your spine. Many people who don’t’ like the noise of the clicking and popping prefer this technique. It is suitable for all ages, and is something we prefer to use with small children, elderly people who may be osteoporotic and pregnant women.
